Tourist Souvenirs: Learning Cultural Identity Representation Through Design

The massification and standardization of souvenirs offered in major tourist destinations around the world seem to compromise authenticity representation cultural identity that these products intend evoke. Although souvenir is a product widely addressed by academic studies tourism other social areas, there gap design about value this object has as representative unique expressions. In article, we observe potential subject for teaching design, didactic exercise focused on valuing identity. 2009, city Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was preparing itself host 2014 FIFA World Cup Rio2016 Olympic Games. From 2009 2011, three hundred students Methods Processes Design course, from Fashion degree SENAI-CETIQT – Chemical Textile Industry Technology Centre National Service Industrial Learning, were encouraged develop an innovative could represent local culture. It possible notice relevance aspects determinant factor differentiation project, addition bringing greater awareness role designer creating non-verbal messages nation or locality.
